Welcome to Home and Abroad Animal Welfare. This website will introduce you to who we are and what we do.
We have been working for the animals of Sri Lanka since 1999 when founder, Janice Down first visited the country. Janice has always been a staunch advocate for animal welfare and has travelled and worked all over the world. However, she was particularly struck by the plight of the animals in Sri Lanka. There was no welfare legislation in place and at every turn there were animals to be seen in desperate need and Janice’s mind was made up. She was needed here.
Our base is in the fishing village of Negombo on the West coast although we travel all over the island to work with animals that are in need of help or rescue. We see injury, disease, neglect, cruelty and aim to eradicate this through a combination of education and social reform. We visit Sri Lanka regularly throughout the year and are very fortunate to have a strong local team working with us.
We have 3 compounds where we house our rescued dogs and have a number of rescued cows that were saved from slaughter and now live with local families. We also have a teaching centre for local children.
HAAAW helps ALL animals in need, and is passionate about stopping ALL cruelty to animals. We have come a long way in since 1999, and aim to achieve much, much more.
